What to do after a traffic accident during a ride
Last updated March 14, 2026
If you're involved in a traffic accident while on a GoRoute trip, your safety and the safety of your passenger come first. Follow these steps to handle the situation properly and ensure your insurance claim is processed smoothly.
Immediate steps
- Check for injuries. Assess yourself, your passenger, and anyone in the other vehicle. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately.
- Move to safety. If the vehicles are drivable and it's safe to do so, move them out of traffic to avoid further collisions.
- Call the police. Even for minor accidents, a police report is essential for insurance claims. Wait for officers to arrive and provide your statement.
- Document the scene. Take photos of all vehicles involved, any visible damage, license plates, the surrounding area, and road conditions. Exchange insurance information and contact details with the other driver.
- Do not admit fault. Be cooperative with police and the other driver, but avoid admitting responsibility. Let the insurance companies determine liability.
Reporting in the GoRoute app
After ensuring everyone's safety, report the accident in the GoRoute app by going to Activity > Current Trip > Report an Incident. You'll be asked to describe what happened and upload any photos. GoRoute's safety team will follow up with you within 24 hours. The trip will be ended and the rider will be assisted with an alternative ride.
Insurance claims
GoRoute provides commercial insurance coverage for accidents that occur during active trips. After you file your in-app report, GoRoute's insurance partner will contact you to begin the claims process. You'll need to provide the police report number, photos, and any other documentation. Your personal auto insurance is secondary during an active GoRoute trip — GoRoute's commercial policy is the primary coverage.
Vehicle inspection
Before you can return to driving on GoRoute, your vehicle must pass an inspection to confirm it meets safety standards. GoRoute will guide you to an approved inspection location. If repairs are needed, you will not be able to go online until the vehicle is certified as roadworthy.
