Insulated bag requirements and food safety standards
Last updated March 3, 2026
Maintaining food quality during transit is essential to customer satisfaction and your ratings. GoRoute requires all food delivery couriers to use insulated bags and follow basic food safety practices.
Insulated bag requirements
Every GoRoute courier delivering food must have at least one insulated delivery bag large enough to hold a standard restaurant order. Your bag should:
- Be made of food-safe, wipeable material — nylon or vinyl with thermal insulation lining.
- Be large enough to hold at least two medium-sized takeout bags.
- Have a zipper or secure closure to maintain temperature during transit.
- Be in good condition — no tears, broken zippers, or heavy staining.
GoRoute offers branded insulated bags for purchase through the courier app at cost. You can also use any third-party bag that meets the requirements above.
Temperature standards
Hot food should be kept hot and cold items should be kept cold. Specifically:
- Place hot food items in the main insulated compartment to retain heat.
- If the order includes cold items (drinks, ice cream, cold sandwiches), keep them separated from hot food — use a different compartment or a separate bag.
- Avoid leaving food in direct sunlight or in a hot vehicle with the windows closed for extended periods.
Hygiene standards
GoRoute expects couriers to maintain basic hygiene standards:
- Clean your delivery bag regularly — wipe down the interior after each shift.
- Wash your hands before and after handling food orders.
- Never open sealed food containers or tamper with orders in any way.
- If a bag or container is visibly damaged or leaking at pickup, ask the restaurant to repackage it.
Replacing your bag
Insulated bags wear out over time. Replace yours when the insulation becomes compressed, the zipper stops working, or the material has stains or odors that can't be cleaned. A well-maintained bag keeps food fresh and contributes to positive customer reviews.
